:The criterion for inclusion on this list is two or more reliable sources that call the death unusual in some way - in this case, Jungco has two articles calling his death a freak accident. We don't generally use 'there are similar deaths' as a reason to void inclusion. NekoKatsun (nyaa) 22:06, 9 March 2026 (UTC) |

Hey @NekoKatsun, just wanted to make a quick talk page to question whether we should include John William Ashe's (and Kyle Thomson's now that I saw it) death from a barbell falling and crushing their necks, which I totally get the revision; sources do consider it a freak accident. I was just unsure as to whether accidental deaths caused by barbell crushes (neck or chest too) should be counted or not because while it is a rare and tragically accidental way in which people have died, it is not unheard of: 1 2 3 (also included in list) 4 5. This forensic case study also shares some interesting statistics: |
|||
According to the estimates based on a sampling survey conducted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the US of 3820 injuries that were sustained in connection with a bench press in 2002, 53% were face or neck injuries and 42% were chest injuries [15]. The main reason for requiring urgent outpatient care was the loss of control of the barbell during a bench press. In addition, according to the CPSC, there were 20 fatalities associated with weight training from 1999 to 2002, of which at least 14 were due to asphyxiation, 12 were associated with a bench press, and four were fatal asphyxiation due to a cervical compression |

It might just be me, but it does feel somewhat confusing to overly rely on the source calling it a "freak accident" if there are multiple more instances of what is essentially the same type of accident occur that we don't include just because the source didn't specifically say "freak accident" and rather something like just "accident". Wondering if you have some thoughts about this? Cheers. B3251(talk) 01:33, 19 April 2026 (UTC) |
