Far from being obscure, The Amateur Astronomer is well known to amateur astronomers of a certain age, as the publication that eventually evolved into Sky and Telescope. It is the most appropriate redirect for "amateur astronomer". Anyone looking for amateur astronomy is unlikely to start the search by typing "amateur astronomer", but in case they do, I've added an "otheruse" tag to The Amateur Astronomer. :Well known? Redirects are not usually changed based on opinion. "Amateur astronomer" comes under "People who are members of a group, organization, ensemble or team" (WP:RCAT) and Amateur astronomer->Amateur astronomy is covered under Wikipedia:Naming conventions#Article title format->Use nouns, "Adjective and verb forms... should redirect to articles titled with the corresponding noun". "principle of least astonishment" should be followed here, "Amateur astronomer" the person Google test around 200,000 while the publication "The Amateur Astronomer" Google test at 236. Since I myself see no justification for changing this redirect I have reverted the change and moved the hatnote. You can always post a case for moving the redirect at Talk:Amateur astronomy and see if there is some consensus for the change.
