New Indian Netflix Original Series Coming in 2024
Killer Soup
Picture: Netflix
Killer Soup is the first new Indian Original series out of the gate in 2024! Manoj Bajpayee (Ray, Mrs. Serial Killer) stars in the series opposite Konkona Sen Sharma (Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare), who plays an untalented amateur chef who won’t let anyone stand in the way of her dream to open a restaurant. Check out our full preview of Killer Soup here.
Killer Soup will be released on January 11th, 2024.
Baahubali: Before the Beginning
The epic prequel series Baahubali: Before the Beginning remains in a zombie state — not fully alive but not officially dead yet either. (Read our Netflix Indian Originals previews from 2021, 2022, and 2023 for a full history of the drama surrounding this show.) The latest scoop is that Khufiya‘s Wamiqa Gabbi said in a recent YouTube interview that she had been cast in Baahubali: Before the Beginning and was training for her role, but things shut down when producers couldn’t settle on a director. She added: “I hope it restarts again.” The wait continues.
Dabba Cartel
There’s finally progress on Dabba Cartel, a series we first mentioned in our 2022 Indian Originals preview. Pinkvilla reports that the great Shabana Azmi (Kaali Khuhi) and Shalini Pandey (Arjun Reddy) will headline the crime thriller, along with three other actresses who’ve yet to be named. Production house Excel Entertainment initially described the series as “a story of five housewives who run a high stakes secret cartel.”
For Your Eyes Only
This spy drama from production house Bombay Fables (Serious Men, Decoupled) wrapped filming in late March, but star Kritika Kamra told Bollywood Hungama in September:
It is an immersive show. The scale is really big. We finished shooting for it, but the post-production will take some time. So that will only come out sometime next year.
Heeramandi
Picture: Netflix
Another project that’s been underway for a couple of years is nearing completion. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is poring over every detail of Heeramandi, his period epic about courtesans, going so far as to handle reshoots himself. Check out our full preview of Heeramandi, which we hear has a preliminary release date of May 10, 2024.
IC 814
Director Anubhav Sinha’s & writer Trishant Srivastava’s (Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, Jamtara: Sabka Number Ayega) true-life hijacking drama IC 814 finalized Vijay Varma (Jaane Jaan, Darlings) as its leading man. The IMDb listing for the series touts an impressive supporting cast that includes Squid Game‘s breakout star Anupam Tripathi.
Kapil Sharma’s Comedy Show
After his Netflix Original stand-up special I’m Not Done Yet, comedian Kapil Sharma joins forces with the streamer again for an as-yet unnamed comedy series. The new sketch comedy show reunites Sharma with some of the co-stars from his previous shows, including Archana Puran Singh, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, Rajiv Thakur, and Sunil Grover.
New Indian Original Movies Coming in 2024
Afghaani Snow
Afghaani Snow is the newest production from Clean Slate Filmz as part of their ongoing partnership with Netflix. Vijay Varma — who stars in the action thriller opposite Clean Slate-regular Tripti Dimri — posted on social media in April that he’d finished shooting the first schedule for the film, which is directed by Mai-director Anshai Lal.
Amar Singh Chamkila
Actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh plays Amar Singh Chamkila in this biopic about the famous Punjabi pop star who was assassinated in 1988. Earlier this month, Parineeti Chopra posted on Instagram about the challenge of losing the 15 kilos she gained to play the role of Chamkila’s wife Amarjot in the movie.
Chakda ‘Xpress
Picture: Netflix
Filming for the biopic about cricket legend Jhulan Goswami wrapped in December 2022, and star Anushka Sharma finished her dubbing sessions back in May, so hopefully Chakda ‘Xpress is almost ready to go. Sharma hasn’t confirmed the pregnancy rumors that have swirled around her for months — although she’s now starring in ads for pregnancy tests! — so there’s a chance that film promotions could be held up if Baby #2 really is on the way.
Do Patti
Kriti Sanon makes her debut as a producer in the thriller Do Patti, which she stars in opposite Kajol (Tribhanga, Lust Stories 2). Filming kicked off in August and wrapped mid-December. Kajol says of the new movie:
Do Patti has a standout script that promises a unique blend of adventure and mystery. It is a story that is not only rooted in India, but also promises the thrill that can be enjoyed by entertainment enthusiasts across borders.
Maharaj
After the Original limited series The Railway Men, the second officially announced product of the multi-year partnership between Netflix and legacy studio Yash Raj Films is the period piece Maharaj. The movie features the debut of Junaid Khan, son of actor Aamir Khan. Variety’s reporting on the film describes the story as:
A David vs Goliath story about how a regular man, journalist by profession, takes on a powerful role-model of society, hailed by many as a messiah for the masses. The fearless reporter uncovers a series of incidents that shake the very foundation of society.
Murder Mubarak
After their heist film Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga became a huge hit on Netflix, production house Maddock Films opted to release director Homi Adijania’s Murder Mubarak directly on the streamer, bypassing theaters. It’s unclear whether this new movie will be billed as a Netflix Original like Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga or will simply be a direct-to-Netflix release like earlier Maddock pictures Mimi and Dasvi. Either way, one can never have too much Vijay Varma — he stars in the comic thriller opposite Sara Ali Khan and Karishma Kapoor.
Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale
Picture: Netflix
No real updates on the celebrity wedding documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale other than a report in early 2023 that it is still happening. Plus, it still has a Netflix catalogue entry.
Siddharth Anand action film starring Saif Ali Khan
Filmmaker Siddharth Anand is set to produce an action flick starring Sacred Games‘ Saif Ali Khan that will hopefully be the first in a franchise. Robbie Grewal writes and directs the thriller, which Netflix purportedly bought for upwards of $7 million (Rs 60 crore). Besides Khan, the rest of the cast looks killer, per the IMDb listing.
Super Soldier
Director Ali Abbas Zafar says that the planned superhero movie starring Katrina Kaif isn’t shelved, but it wasn’t actively being worked on as of June 2023. Zafar said: “That film is very much happening but I’m waiting for the right time to make the film.”
Yo Yo Honey Singh documentary
Netflix is working on a documentary about the turbulent career of rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh. Singh says:
I have spoken about my personal & career issues in the media before but I’ve never been able to bare it all. I have received tremendous love from my fans, and they deserve to know the whole story. This Netflix docu-film will give everyone an honest and sincere account of my life, my upbringing, where I’ve been and my current journey to return stronger.
Officially Renewed Indian Original Series
On March 14, 2023, Netflix released a video announcing the Season 3 renewals of Delhi Crime, The Fabulous Lives of Indian Wives, Kota Factory, Mismatched, and She.
Some of those renewed shows are further along in development of their new seasons than others (there’s no news about She Season 3, as of this writing), and more renewals have been announced since. Here’s what we know about these officially renewed series:
Class (Season 2)
The teen drama Class was renewed for a second season one month after it premiered — an indication that Netflix was very happy with its viewership numbers.
Delhi Crime (Season 3)
In October, Delhi Crime star Shefali Shah gave India Today an update on where Season 3 stands:
We haven’t started shooting for the show yet, it’s currently in the scripting stage. We will shoot next year ,and I assume that it will be released by next year’s end, again not very sure of the release. It all depends on when we start shooting and wrap up.
The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives (Season 3)
The Fabulous Lives universe is expanding to Delhi, and Ranbir Kapoor’s sister Riddhima Kapoor Sahni will join the cast for the new season. Several of the original cast members met with Mindy Kaling at Netflix’s Mumbai office early in 2023, so we’ll have to wait and see if that meeting becomes part of the show, too.
Kaala Paani (Season 2)
Kaala Paani is another series that Netflix quickly renewed for a second season.
Khakee: The Bihar Chapter (Season 2)
A second chapter of Khakee is the first product of a new creative partnership with Neeraj Pandey’s Friday Storytellers LLP.
Kota Factory (Season 3)
Kota Factory star Ahsaas Channa shared an update on Season 3 with ABP Live over the summer:
Its being written. We still don’t know when we are going to shoot and all, but it’s definitely being written. It’s under process.
Mismatched (Season 3)
Actor Rohit Saraf recently posted a photo of himself, his Mismatched co-star Prajakta Koli, and director Akarsh Khurana to his Instagram with the caption, “Missed us?” So, it looks like things are rolling for Season 3.
Rana Naidu (Season 2)
The Indian remake of Ray Donovan returns for a second season, but this time with fewer expletives.
Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein (Season 2)
Actor Shweta Tripathi Sharma gave Bollywood Hungama an update on Season 2 in August:
In a few months from now, the shoot for Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen season 2 will start. We will start shooting for it in the last quarter of the year. I just got the narration for it.
Netflix Indian Series Awaiting Official Renewal
There are a lot of Indian Original shows with indeterminate fates. A few — Choona, Eternally Confused and Eager for Love, and Tooth Pari — recently had the “limited series” label added to their catalogue entries, so those shows are likely one-and-done.
There’s a rather long list of Indian Original series about which there is basically no news, which doesn’t bode well for their chances of returning:
Call My Agent: Bollywood (Season 2)
CAT (Season 2)
Decoupled (Season 2)
IRL: In Real Love (Season 2)
Jamtara – Sabka Number Ayega (Season 3)
Mai: A Mother’s Rage (Season 2)
Scoop (Season 2)
Social Currency (Season 2)
Here’s what we know about the remaining series whose fates are still up in the air:
Aranyak (Season 2)
Aranyak producer Siddharth Roy Kapur told News18 in October: “We’ll be making an announcement pretty quickly. I’m happy to say that it’s on track.”
The Fame Game (Season 2)
The Fame Game director Bejoy Nambiar knows just as much about the prospects of a second season as the rest of us, telling The Times of India:
I have no clue about The Fame Game sequel. That is something you’ll have to ask [production house] Dharma and Netflix. I heard they are not planning to go ahead with it, but only they can confirm. It was written with season 2 in mind, but whether they’re going ahead with it, I have no idea.
Guns & Gulaabs (Season 2)
Guns & Gulaabs actress Pooja Gor hinted to Bollywood Hungama that writing may be underway for Season 2: “I wouldn’t spill the beans on the script but I can certainly state that you will see a lot of story lines being developed across characters”
Indian Matchmaking (Season 4)
Netflixreality.com lists Indian Matchmaking as “ongoing,” and the show is still accepting videos for singles interested at being pair up — but who knows if the show’s prospects will be affected after one of the participants was charged with domestic violence.
Kohrra (Season 2)
Per Variety: “The team loved the process of making Kohrra and would love to do a second season”
Masaba Masaba (Season 3)
According to star Neena Gupta, a third season of Masaba Masaba isn’t happening — and she’s not happy about it:
I want to tell Netflix that it isn’t fair that they didn’t sanction us the third season of Masaba Masaba. So many people ask me when the next season of the show will be out. I don’t know why they ask me. We were really looking forward to the third season. I don’t understand and know what Netflix’s strategy is and what kind of shows they actually want to make. I think they should make season three.
