Lake Selfe is situated in the Selwyn District between the Cottons Sheep Range, which reaches heights of up to {{cvt|1445|m}} to the south and west, and Mount Ida, which rises to {{cvt|1695|m}} to the north-northeast, as well as Little Mount Ida, which rises to {{cvt|1050|m}} to the east. The {{cvt|64.3|ha|adj=on}} lake stretches at an elevation of {{cvt|574|m}} and is approximately {{cvt|2.09|km}} long in a northwest-southeast direction. Lake Selfe is fed by a few streams and has its outflow at the northwest end of the lake. Its waters flow into the [[Harper River]] via the Moss Burn and Lake Henrietta.
