Comedian [[Tim Key]] was a member of the Cambridge Footlights, despite not being a student at Cambridge University. He famously bluffed his way into a production of ''Treasure Island'', written by [[Alex Horne]], by posing as a PhD candidate at the university. In 2018, Footlights President Ruby Keane was asked to resign by the rest of the committee following concerns about her “misuse of the role of President” and a “serious incident” during which the Footlights were briefly deregistered as a society. Keane argued that her resignation was instead a response to the committee’s decision not to implement democratic reforms. This prompted a period of presidential vacancy, during which the society was presided over by the committee as a whole.{{cite news |last1=Wei |first1=Siyang |title=Footlights at war as committee accuses ex-president of mismanagement|url=https://www.varsity.co.uk/news/15244 |access-date=29 December 2025 |agency=Varsity |date=29 March 2018}} |
