In February 1474 [[Mihaloğlu Ali Bey]] took advantage of King Matthias's war in Silesia to invade the country and sack one of the richest cities of the [[Hungarian Kingdom]] at the time, [[Oradea]].

At the end of the year the [[Ottoman Empire]] also invaded [[Moldavia]]. With help from Transylvania and Poland [[Stephen the Great]] defeated the invading [[Ottoman]] troops at [[Vaslui]] in January 1475. After the battle Stephen swore fealty to King Matthias.

In 1475 the king waited for autumn with great tactical timing when he summoned his troops to avoid encountering the main [[Ottoman]] army. He advanced slowly towards the [[Danube]] staying in [[Szeged]] on 25 October, [[Tolna]] on 2 November and [[Mohács]] on 5 November. He marched with his army estimated by modern historians to number 10,000-15,000 soldiers consisting of [[Hungarian]], [[Wallachian]], [[Serbian]], [[Szekler]], [[Czechian]] and [[German]] troops.

On 18 November 1475 a letter was sent from the army stating that the king’s ship had joined the fleet heading south on the [[Danube]], both the soldiers and some of the equipment reached the battlefield by water. The king spent [[Christmas]] in the castle of [[Belgrade]], in view of the coming winter months they had to take serious supplies with them and because of the cold the king also had coats made for the soldiers. The crossing of the [[Sava]] and the landing were one of the most critical points of the campaign which the king secured by setting up a mobile wooden fort reinforced with firearms.
