==Participation in Protests and Opposition==

During the authoritarian presidency of Joaquín Balaguer (1966–1978), characterized by political repression including the imprisonment of dissidents and forced exiles, Chico González engaged in opposition activities primarily through cultural performances that critiqued the regime. As a vocalist in the group Expresión Joven, formed in 1972, González participated in events leveraging music as a form of non-violent protest, aligning with the Nueva Canción movement's emphasis on social and political themes.

González's most notable involvement occurred at the "Siete Días con el Pueblo" festival, organized by the Central General de Trabajadores (CGT) and held from November 25 to December 1, 1974, at the Estadio Olímpico in Santo Domingo. This event, shortly after Balaguer's disputed reelection, served as a platform for dissent, featuring international protest artists such as Mercedes Sosa and Silvio Rodríguez alongside Dominican performers including Expresión Joven, where González and Ramón Leonardo were standout contributors with songs expressing social discontent and demands for democracy. The festival drew thousands and symbolized resistance against repression, though it faced government scrutiny without direct violence at the venue.

Expresión Joven's performances, including González's vocals, focused on lyrics addressing inequality and authoritarianism, contributing to a broader wave of cultural opposition that influenced youth activism amid limited overt street protests due to state control. While González avoided direct affiliation with underground political groups, his public musical engagements positioned him as a voice in the non-violent cultural front against Balaguer's rule, helping sustain calls for civil liberties during a period of heightened surveillance.
