Park Dong-hyeok (박동혁, 朴東赫; August 24, 1981 - September 20, 2002) was a Republic of Korea Navy sailor who was mortally wounded during the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong on June 29, 2002.

He is perhaps best remembered not for his rank, which was modest, but for what came after. The Republic of Korea Navy, in an almost unprecedented gesture, named one of its patrol vessels after him. In the entire history of the Korean naval fleet, no warship had ever been named after an enlisted sailor rather than an officer or petty officer. Park Dong-hyeok's ship remains the only one.

Life
Park was born on August 24, 1981, in Gojan-ri, Suam-myeon, Siheung County, Gyeonggi-do, the eldest of two sons born to Park Nam-jun and Lee Gyeong-jin. The area is now part of Gojan-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan.

He graduated from Gyeongan High School in Gyeonggi-do and enrolled in the dental technology program at Wonkwang Health Science University in 2000, though he took a leave of absence before completing his studies. In February 2001, he was conscripted into the Republic of Korea Navy as the 456th recruit class, training as a medical corpsman. He was first assigned to ROKS Cheonan, then transferred in April 2002 to Patrol Killer Coastal 357, a Chamsuri-class patrol boat.

On June 29, 2002, the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong broke out in the Yellow Sea. Park was in the middle of treating wounded crewmates when he was hit by over a hundred rounds of gunfire and shrapnel. He kept going for as long as he could.

After the battle ended, he was evacuated to the Capital Armed Forces Hospital in Seongnam. He held on for 84 days.

Three days before he died, he was posthumously awarded the Chungmu Order of Military Merit alongside Yun Yeong-ha, the lieutenant commander who had commanded PKC-357 and was killed in the battle itself. Park Dong-hyeok died on September 20, 2002. He was 21 years old.

His remains were interred at the Daejeon National Cemetery.

In 2007, a bust of Park was erected at the Republic of Korea Armed Forces Medical School at Jaunae.munhwa2007 In 2003, Wonkwang Health Science University posthumously awarded him the honorary associate degree he never got to finish.sfn One of the Yun Yeong-ha-class patrol killer medium vessels commissioned to commemorate the battle and its fallen was named ROKS Park Dong-hyeok in his honor.herald2012 It remains, to this day, the only ship in the history of the Republic of Korea Navy to bear the name of an enlisted sailor.
