The river rises from [[Mount Washiba]] in the [[Hida Mountains]] and carves the deep valley known as the [[Kurobe Gorge]]. It comes out of the mountains at [[Unazuki, Toyama|Unazuki]] and forms an [[alluvial fan]] which directly sinks into the [[Sea of Japan]].
