Denis was born in Bucharest, Romania, and moved to the United States at the age of three, where he was raised in Massachusetts. Denis has trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu since 2018. He initially began his training at Brazilian Top Team Boston (BTT Boston), where he developed his foundational grappling skills.

In February 2023, he began training at Mau Mau Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, where he continues to refine his technique and prepare for competition.

Bălan is also affiliated with [[GFTeam]], a Brazilian jiu-jitsu team known for its competitive athletes and structured training system. Through his association with GFTeam, he has gained additional exposure to competition-focused training and team-based development.
