:G'day Bryn, |
:I'm very surprised and disappointed to see that my contributions to the "''Alexandria expedition of 1807''" have been rejected as 'deemed to not contribute positively to the article'. |
:The article as it stands is a mess. Many of the statements in it are inaccurate and have been made without providing any verifiable citations. |
:Since 2023 I have referred to the article on many occasions. Until very recently I accepted the narrative it provided about the Battle of Rosetta as being true; that the brigade led by Major-General Wauchope unwittingly walked into an ambush in the town (the "Ambush Narrative"). I recently stumbled across the very different accounts provided in the cited journals published in 1813 and 1837. I copied long passages from these journals into the Wikipedia article as I expected there would be opposition to the publication of anything other than the Ambush Narrative. I did this in the expectation that these long passages would be shortened once any debate as to the proper narrative had been settled. |
:I did not assert that the two new narratives are necessarily true, or that they tell the whole story of the battle. I know that some contributors might be annoyed that I am challenging the widely accepted truth of the Ambush Narrative. I hoped, and I still hope, that my contributions will encourage further research, and debate and will lead to the discovery of more facts about the battle. |

:PS: I do have a couple of selfish motives. Two of my great-great-great-grandfathers served in the 31st Foot, and I think that one of them might have been in the Battle of Rosetta. I was looking for proof of his involvement when I stumbled across the two articles which made me question the Ambush Narrative and prompted my contribution to Wikipedia. And I have an interest in safeguarding the reputation of my forebears' regiment. [[User:IanD-7A2|IanD-7A2]] ([[User talk:IanD-7A2#top|talk]]) 04:07, 23 April 2026 (UTC) |
