Defining a Color "Class": Reply

The content of an infobox would therefore differ depending on what class the color term falls into, and of course, there can be several definitions of a color in different color classes, as we already see with most basic colors like blue, which starts with 6 definitions of "blue", spanning several classes. An indication of the class, in the infobox, with a hoverbox defining the class would also be useful. Curran919 (talk) 11:28, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

:Yes, @Curran919, unbelievable that this serious issue was raised three years ago and go no replies.
:I think your bullets are a good outline. And with reference to that, I think the biggest problem is where it's not clear to the casual reader which of those it is. Your first bullet is in one sense the least problematic, but in another sense it's hugely problematic. Let's say there's a page for a color (e.g.,
:Aquamarine (color)) and on the top right is an infobox, with a bold heading with the color name and a bar shaped swatch. The casual reader thinks OK, that's officially what the color looks like. And maybe if they look closely they see it as "source" with "X11" listed as the source. Per a normal wikipedia page, a source should back up the truth of what is being presented. But the X11 color name tables are not an authoritative definition of what those color names mean in any general way! The only truth that that source validates is what that color name maps to in the X11 color name table.
:Here's my recommended fix: Make the bold header note which category the swatch shown is in. For example, instead of saying Aquamarine, it should say Color called 'Aquamarine' in X11 color table.
:We could code that up to happen automatically for some of the categories of so-called sources. For others, we could have the default language be something like Example of a color sometimes called XXXX.
:We should also automatically flag any that have no source for review and possible deletion. Ccrrccrr (talk) 01:07, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
