Between his political connections as state auditor and his social connections through various civic and community organizations, King made several attempts to win higher office ,most notably running in the Republican primaries for governor against [[Luther Youngdahl]] in 1948 and against [[C. Elmer Anderson]] in 1952. King's campaign against Youngdahl was centered around deregulation of certain industries, notably a campaign to attempt to legalize [[gambling]]. King called the ban an “insidious encroachment of centralized authority upon local, county and state's rights.”{{cite news|last=Parlin|first=L.D.|title=Auditor's Surprise Move Sets Stage For Hot Campaign|publisher=St. Paul Pioneer Press|date=August 6, 1948|url=https://newspaperhub.mnhs.org/?a=d&d=sppp19480806.1.1&srpos=6&e=------194-en-20--1--img-txIN-youngdahl----1948-------}} |
