His mother, Smaranda Râșcanu, came from an old Moldovan boyar and ruling family. She was the daughter of Spătar Matei Râșcanu and Casandra Sturdza. The historian and genealogist Gheorghe Ghibănescu dedicated one volume of his series ''Surete și Izvoade'' to the Râșcanu family, which also includes the family tree. This was later completed by historian Gheorghe G. Bezviconi.

His father was Colonel Leopold Derojinski of the Russian imperial army. Because his father died early and his mother’s uncle, Spătar Iordache Râșcanu, had no heirs, Gheorghe (Egor) was adopted by him. He kept both surnames, Râșcanu from his adoptive family and Derojinski from his biological father.
