Before Farmington, the area was called the Burton Bench after early settler Z.T. Burton. He, along with other Norwegian and German [[Lutheranism|Lutheran]] settlers from Minnesota, moved to the area in the late 1890's and renamed Burton Bench, to Farmington Bench after a farming community in Minnesota. The bench later became a small community, and due to a tradition of cooperation from the settlers, they established a canal company, creamery, telephone company, and several other enterprises. Later, in 1889, a post office was established and named Farmington, but closed in 1951.
