Excavation and topographic study indicate that the ancient settlement of [[Eryx (city)|Eryx]] was smaller than the medieval and modern town and concentrated on the northern summit. Its northern limit is marked by an archaic wall uncovered north of Porta Castellammare, where excavation confirmed an earlier fortification line.
