The inaugural Western Pennsylvania Amateur Championship was contested at the Pittsburgh Golf Club, who's golf course is now the [[Bob O'Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park]]. The champion was George A. Ormiston of the [[Pittsburgh Field Club]], who defeated Joseph E. The early years of the championship were dominated by [[William C. Fownes Jr.]] and [[Eben Byers]], two [[U.S. Amateur]] champions. From 1901 to 1916, one, if not both, of Fownes or Byers reached the finals. [[Arnold Palmer]] is one of four junior players to claim the championship, along with Fred Brand Jr., Barrett Melvin and William Miller.
