Assin, also known as Asen, was the third of the principal Akan states.{{sfn|Daaku|2016|pp=51}} Assin formed part of Accania, and its territory was located along the southern frontier of the Akani region, where it developed into a major center of large-scale trade from the sixteenth to the late seventeenth century.{{sfn|Kea|1982|p=251}}{{sfn|Daaku|1970|pp=146–147}} In 1660, Wilhelm Johann Müller referred to Assin as ''Assingrud'', which he described as the “first land of the great kingdom of Accania". According to him, Assin did not produce gold itself but functioned as a carrier state, transporting gold to the coast from mining areas farther north.{{sfn|Daaku|1970|pp=146–147}} The region was originally comprised of different ruling lineages, including the Asenee of Attandasu, the Asona of Apemanim, the Afutuakwa of Fosu, and the Aboabo of Assin Nyankomase, who traced their earlier homes to Adanse and to the region between the Pra River and the Kwisa hills. The Attandasu were linked to places such as Nimiaso and Apagya, while the Apemanim were connected to Ansa.{{sfn|Daaku|2016|pp=51-52}} |
