In Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl, it is mentioned that a letter from the caliph came to the city. The letter was meant to inform everyone of the caliph's appointment of his son as crown prince. In the letter, it mentioned "We gave him wisdom as a child" (Qurʾān 19:12, referring to Prophet Yaḥyā. But the caliph mentioned it to refer to his son). Upon hearing this, Abū Muṭīʿ entered upon the governor and said: "Has the danger of this world reached a point that we disbelieve (in God) because of it?" He repeated this several times until the governor wept and said: "I agree with you, but I do not dare to speak. So you are safe from me." So on Friday, he went and ascended the pulpit and said: "O assembly of Muslims!" He grasped his beard and wept, saying, "The danger of this world has reached a point that it leads one to disbelief. Whoever says: ‘And we gave him wisdom as a child’ referring to other than Yaḥyā, is a disbeliever.” |
